Ronald Belford "Bon Scott" was best known for being the lead singer and lyricist of Australian hard rock band AC/DC from 1974-1980.
He was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia with his family in 1952 at the age of six. In 1956 the Scott family then moved to Fremantle Western Australia.
Bon and his brother attended North Fremantle Primary School spending their spare time swimming in the Swan River a short stroll from the end of their street.
Then in 1957, Bon's father Chick works as a Baker. Once settled, he joins the Caledonian Society and The Caledonian Scots Pipe Band of Fremantle. Bon tags along with his father starting his musical career as a Drummer in the Bagpipe Band. He is awarded at the Opening Ceremony at The Empire Games (Perry Lakes Stadium Perth WA) Best Side Drummer and wins the Novice Champion for Drumming and he continued playing in the Pipe Band until he was 17.
He was also awarded Best Side Drummer and wins the Novice Champion for Drumming. Bon continues playing in the Pipe Band until he is 17.
Forming his first band, The Spektors, in 1964 and becoming the band's drummer and occasional lead vocalist. He performed in several other bands including The Valentines and Fraternity before replacing Dave Evans as the lead singer of AC/DC in 1974.
AC/DC's popularity grew throughout the 1970s, initially in Australia, and then internationally. Their 1979 album Highway to Hell reached the top twenty in the United States, and the band seemed on the verge of a commercial breakthrough.
On 19 February 1980, Bon Scott was found dead after a night of partying in London.
AC/DC's subsequent album, Back in Black, was released only five months later, and was a tribute to Scott. It went on to become the second best-selling album in history.
Every year on the anniversary of his passing and on his birthday, fans from around the world gather to CELEBRATE his music and life at Fremantle Cemetery's Memorial Garden
In 2008 a 5’ 6” lifesize bronze statue of Bon Scott was erected at Fremantles Fishing Boat Harbour, directly outside Cicerello’s overlooking the Fishing Boat Harbour where Bon used to work as a Crayfisherman.
There initially was an unofficial unveiling in February 2008 at a rock concert dedicated to Bon. A 10,000 strong AC/DC fans gathered at the Claremont showgrounds (Perth WA) to be given the first glimpse of the statue, before it was to be erected in Fremantle.
There’s a plaque in the small town of Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland, Bon’s birth place.
