The Coeliac Research Fund (CRF) was established to increase awareness, improve diagnosis and facilitate research into coeliac disease. The CRF is a conduit bringing together the very best in their fields to focus on what those with coeliac disease really want, practical outcomes that make life better for those with coeliac disease along the way to finding a cure.
1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, some 210,000 Australians. Of these a shocking 75% are undiagnosed. This means over 157,500 people are walking time bombs they have coeliac disease and don’t know it. What is more alarming is that coeliac disease is present at the age of 5 yrs but the average age of diagnosis is 40 yrs.
Statistics indicate that between 28,000 and 50,000 Australians are diagnosed and are living with reduced quality of life and health issues as a result.
Stories from around Australia are often heart-breakingly similar, with the journey to diagnosis taking a long time, often with many years of ill-health. Given that coeliac disease is present by the age of 5 the condition not only affects the person with the condition, but has long term and significant impact on family and friends. The CRF is determined to bring about change.
